If you’re in the planning stages, you’ve probably noticed that there are a lot of choices, it can be a little overwhelming. I put together this Oʻahu Travel Guide to help you navigate all the decisions so you can experience an island escape that fits your travel style perfectly.
The Oʻahu Travel Guide
My family and I have spent more time on Oʻahu than any other destination in the world – and every single visit, this island finds a new way to surprise me. I have such a love for this place, the people, the culture, and the way wellness is simply woven into everyday life here. There is so much to take in – and I love sharing what I know with others planning a visit.
There’s a reason that Oʻahu is the most visited out of the Hawaiian islands, it’s genuinely unlike anywhere else. The North Shore surf culture, the lush Windward coast, the buzz of the Waikīkī cityscape against the ocean, the calm lagoons of Ko Olina – they’re all one island, and they all feel completely different.
The beaches are something out of a movie, the mountains are stunning and there are so many unique spots to discover. It also has the most accommodation options of any Hawaiian island, from world-class beachfront resorts to tucked-away vacation rentals.
One thing I always want first-time visitors to know – Oʻahu is a lively, busy island and that energy is a huge part of what makes it so special. But if crowds aren’t your thing, it’s worth exploring all the Hawaiian islands to find your perfect fit.

Getting To & Around Oʻahu : Flights & Transportation
Whether this is your first trip to Oʻahu or your fifth, a little planning goes a long way when it comes to getting there and getting around.
Here’s everything you need to know before you land.
Flying Into Oʻahu
You’ll fly into Daniel K. Inouye Airport, which is about 30 minutes from Waikīkī Beach.
The airport features open air corridors and a beautiful cultural garden. You get a taste of the island breeze as soon as you land! You can book lei greetings to welcome you (some hotels gift this at check-in as well).
Car rentals, Uber, Lyft, Taxis, shuttles and public transport are located directly at the airport.
Note : This is the airport you’ll use for inter-island flights.
Airport Transportation
Visiting Oʻahu without a car and looking to schedule a shuttle from the airport to your hotel?
There are a few great options of local shuttles that will get you to where you’re going.
Getting Around Oʻahu
Oʻahu can be done without a car, especially if you’re staying in Waikīkī. Plan to take tours that pick you up, or even rent a car for a couple days if you’re not wanting a vehicle the entire time.
But this is an incredibly diverse island that should absolutely be explored. If a rental is in your budget, consider it for some of your trip and get out of your resort and Waikīkī.
Renting A Car In Oʻahu
We typically use Turo in Hawaiʻi. We’ve had some awesome car experiences and have met wonderful people. Plus you get to pick out the car you’re driving!
Note : Oʻahu hotel parking is expensive, there’s no getting around it. Most hotel parking is about $50/day. It’s important to plan for this cost if you’re renting a car.
Taking The Bus In Oʻahu
Hawaiʻi’s bus system is safe and affordable. It’s an excellent option if you’re staying in Waikīkī and looking to explore a few spots that The Bus goes to.
Where To Stay In Oʻahu
Choosing where to stay is honestly one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your Oʻahu trip – it completely shapes your experience.
There are only 3 main areas in Oʻahu that hotels and rentals are legally allowed to operate short-term. Each one offers a completely different vibe, and if you’re a beach lover like I am, you’ll be happy to know that all three have beachfront options.

Finding Your Perfect Accommodations
Deciding where to stay in Oʻahu can feel a little overwhelming because there are so many different hotels and rentals. The first thing to decide on is which area of the island is best for the type of trip you’re planning. Each area offers completely different experiences for visitors.

Waikīkī
Waikīkī will be the most convenient spot to land if you want to be in the center of it all. It is always busy – but that also means that it’s the most convenient area to navigate, and has the most accommodation options (it has the most variety in prices, too).
You can walk throughout, and you’ll find an abundance of restaurants, world class shopping, beaches, entertainment & nightlife.
My Favorite Waikīkī Hotels & Rentals
Waikīkī has hotel and rental options for any kind of trip that you’re planning
– budget to luxury; city to beachfront. This is where most visitors stay.
Ko Olina
It’s a resort community almost an hour from Waikīkī that features 4 calm beach lagoons (perfect for littles or a chill beach day). Since Ko Olina is located on the sunny Leeward side of the island, it’s typically the safest spot to land for rain-free days.
Tip : check the weather in Ko Olina if you’re getting rain in other areas of Oʻahu! It’s a great spot to escape the showers.

The North Shore
The surfer’s winter paradise in North Shore Oʻahu is the spot to choose if you’re looking for laid-back charm, a sleepy town experience and nature all around. It’s a much slower pace and feels like a getaway even for locals.

The North Shore of Oʻahu is down to earth and moves at a slower pace than the rest of the island. There are far less accommodations than in Waikīkī or Ko Olina.
Beachfront
If staying beachfront is a non-negotiable for you (like it is for me!), you’ll be happy find beachfront options in Waikīkī, Ko Olina and on the North Shore.

Things To Do Around Oʻahu
Oʻahu has kept our family busy and completely in awe for years – and I still feel like our bucket list grows longer with each visit. Whether you are visiting for a chill beach trip, or want to pack every day with adventure, here are the experiences I personally recommend and keep coming back to.
See The Island
Oʻahu’s landscape is unlike anywhere else – the lush, green Windward coast, the sun-soaked Leeward side, the laid-back charm of the North Shore, and the electric energy of Waikīkī where you’ll spot surfboards walking down the street. Getting away from where you’re staying and seeing it all is absolutely worth it.
Surfing, Snorkeling & Sailing
There is something about seeing Oʻahu from the water that completely changes your perspective of the island. Whether you’re paddling out for your first surf lesson, snorkeling above a reef, or sailing into the sunset – the ocean here is something to experience during your visit.
Ziplining & Adventure
If you want to see Oʻahu from a completely different angle, ziplining delivers. The runs are an absolute blast and the views of the island from above are something you won’t forget. It’s one of our favorite things to do as a family that incorporates a little wellness, a lot of laughs, and a great way to learn while having fun.
Best Hikes In Oʻahu
With over 200 hiking trails around the island, it’s is one of the best ways to take in Oʻahu’s nature at your own pace. Some of our most memorable family moments on the island have happened on these trails.
Most hikes are entirely free (some have a small parking fee or require a reservation).
Oʻahu Cultural Experiences
Don’t visit Hawaiʻi without supporting and learning about local culture and history as much as you can – it’s so important, and has been some of the most meaningful time we’ve spent on the island.
Every single one of these experiences left us with a deeper love and respect for this place.

Ko Olina Sunset Sail
Where: Leeward Oʻahu
Set out on our favorite sunset sail from Ko Olina and settle into calm waters, comfy seats, incredible sunset views, and feel-good tunes all the way through.

Kualoa Ranch E-Biking
Where: Windward Oʻahu
Explore the breathtaking ranch by e-bike with a guide who brings the history of the land to life. Comfy bikes & incredible views. Novice or experienced routes available.
Tip : Bring a poncho just in case – this tour runs rain or shine!
Oʻahu Restaurants, Food Trucks & Farmers Markets
Honest confession – the food on Oʻahu is one of the things I look forward to most every single visit. From fresh poke and açaí bowls to plate lunches and shave ice, the flavors here are unlike anywhere else in the world.
Note : I’m vegan, and these are some of my favorite healthy spots with vegan options to grab a bite.
You’ll run into multiple food truck parks around the island and can’t go wrong with any of them!

Some Mālama Tips To Care For Oʻahu
- Support local – eat at locally owned restaurants, shop small, and book experiences run by people from the island. Your dollars go directly back to the community that makes this place what it is.
- Visit the North Shore – the area has faced real hardship from recent flooding. Showing up, spending money, and being present is one of the most meaningful things you can do as a visitor right now.
- Leave it cleaner than you found it – pick up after yourself and others on the beach and the trails. Keep your distance from wildlife. Wear reef-safe sunscreen. The ocean and land here is extraordinary and it needs us to treat it that way.
- Learn before you go – Hawaiian culture and history are rich, layered, and not always what visitors expect. Ask questions with genuine curiosity. Listen more than you talk. Remember that you are a guest on this land, and act accordingly.
