Adding Crystals To Your Yoga Practice (A Convo With Crystal RX's Colleen McCann)

March 28, 2019

Crystals are stunning and can draw you in based on their pure beauty alone...but we want to learn more.  So many yogis benefit from the healing properties of crystals on and off the yoga mat...we're taking the month of March to learn all about these energetic wonders so we (and you!) can do the same.

As we dive deeper into our month of focusing on everything crystal, we got curious about incorporating crystals into our yoga practice.

We needed an expert opinion.  So we had another convo with Colleen McCann - energy practitioner and author of Crystal RX - to get some answers.

Colleen holds the esteemed title of Shamanic Energy Medicine Practitioner with an accreditation as Healer Light Body, she has studied Nordic and Mexican Shamanism, she is a Reiki Master and has spent a decade studying with a Buddhist Feng Shui Master to learn Crystal Healing and Space Clearing (we could go on about her experience).  With Colleen's time and immense education working as a healer and crystal expert, as well as her incredible book being such a resource, we knew that we were going to get educated on adding crystals to our yoga.

KL : How do you recommend choosing crystals to practice with?

Colleen : Crystals all have different capabilities and powers. Certain stones are ideal for healing the body, some are best for tapping into your intuition, others are suited for working on emotional issues. The crystal you need will speak to you!

When you first come into contact with your crystal, you may experience any of the following sensations: the stone may get hot in your hand, you may feel tingles into your arm, or you may feel a third-eye buzz. You may also "just know," or feel, that a crystal you encounter is a good fit. Trust your intuition.

When I personally choose a crystal I rely on all my bodies senses to pick the right crystal for me at that moment as I know, see, hear & feel energy.

1. I may put my hand out like a metal detector & skim over a selection of crystals to feel the energy of right one.

2. A particular sparkly gem may keep screaming from across the room "pick me, pick me".

3. I may pick a crystal based on knowing what the energetic properties of the crystals are related to with what I am personally working on.

4. I may use a pendulum to pick my crystal. Pound Pendulum is my fav!

KL : Do you have any favorite crystals to practice with?

Colleen : I do have favorite crystals that I wear on the daily that I call my "power crystals". Power Crystals energetically are aligned with your essence. PS. Everyone has different power crystals & I can help you identify those.

Bikram-ing in a room full of people can create a lot of energy flying around the room....so crystals that you take to class should be cleared & re-energized on a regular basis.

KL : How many crystals should you practice with?

Colleen : You can practice with as many crystals that feel right to you. Perhaps you wear a crystal Mala one particular day & on another occasion your purse is filled to the brim crystals.

KL : Do you suggest practicing with one type of crystal, or combinations of several?

Colleen : It is A-OK to practice with one or many types of crystals. Crystals are social so go ahead & mix n' match based on what you are working on when hitting the mat. PS. The only crystals that should never be paired together are Hematite & Amethyst.

KL : Do you love to incorporate crystals into a specific type of yoga practice?

Colleen : I wear crystal jewelry everyday. When I practice Power Vinyasa I like to take my necklace off right before class starts & place it at the front of my mat for the duration of the class where I can see it. When I practice fire breathing I like to hold Clear Quartz as this crystal is very good conduit for receiving information.

KL : How do you like to set up your space for a crystal yoga practice?

Colleen : I advise my clients who want to practice yoga with crystals to imagine themselves & their yoga mat as the center 'sparkly gem' or "Focus Stone" in a crystal grid. It is then up to them to grid the surrounding perimeter accordingly before they start their practice. You can learn more about gridding in my book, Crystal Rx!

KL : Any specific tips for practicing yoga with crystals?

Colleen : A hot tip for practicing yoga with crystals would be around 'Spiritual Hygiene'. Practically speaking yoga can be a steamy practice. Bikram-ing in a room full of people can create a lot of energy flying around the room....so crystals that you take to class should be cleared & re-energized on a regular basis. I recommend daily to once a week depending on your yoga schedule.

KL : What should we expect to feel when practicing yoga with crystals?

Colleen : As everyone senses energy in a different way the results will vary when adding crystals into your yoga practice. Many people have described their experiences as feeling heat or tingles in their body, increased energy, creativity bursts, heightened sense of awareness or receiving information through a channel.

KL : Does this practice work better regularly?

Colleen : I believe anything you practice at whether it be cooking, dancing or 'crystaling' works 'better' when you engage with it on a regular basis. Energy flows where you direct it.

KL : Any other tips/need to know in your opinion?

Colleen : I would recommend that yoga studio owners who anchor their space with crystals or retail crystals should energetically clean their stones on a regular basis as there is a lot of energy that gets released in class. Also, due to the sweaty nature of the yoga biz I would refrain from using Selenite, which is a salt-based crystal, within the studio as it can break/crack/disintegrate when exposed to water.

So much great info and again what it comes down to is to just choose the crystals that feel right to you.  Are you going to begin incorporating crystals into your yoga practice?
